Kingsdown Poppy Tapestry
by Ali Ward

The amazing Kingsdown Poppy Tapestry was been created by the children and parents of Kingsdown School and artist Ali Ward. This wonderful community art piece was created by recycling discarded red t-shirts and weaving them into wonderful shapes that give thanks to the hundreds of service personnel from the Royal Flying Corps who were stationed at LSA during the Great  War when it was called Rochford Aerodrome.

As well as Kingsdown, pupils from St Christopher’s School Academy and Heycroft Primary School also contributed time and helped to weave this lovely piece. Children from St Christopher’s and Heycroft School came to workshops at Kingsdown and the parents donated loads of fabric and gave their time to cut it and to weave too. The Kingsdown Staff and their families were also amazing and determined to help us reach our target of 100 poppies.

Kingsdown is a Special School for children aged 3 to 14 who have severe learning difficulties (SLD), profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), physical disabilities and associated learning difficulties. The majority of pupils have communication difficulties.  The school works collaboratively with families and a range of professionals, to provide a nurturing environment for pupils to enable them to feel safe and thereby allowing them the dignity of challenge.
