Friends of Southend Cemeteries

Blade Education is happy to announce that funding has been secured from the Heritage Lottery Fund to establish a new charity called the Friends of Southend Cemeteries (FoSC) in order to support the respectful use of the 3 municipal cemeteries within the Borough of Southend-on-Sea.

The Friends of Southend Cemeteries (FoSC) will aim to work with local community groups such as the Southend Branch of the Essex Society for Family History, the Leigh Society and the Leigh-on-Sea Branch of the Royal British Legion, to build a group of people with the necessary experience and skills to form a trustee board and volunteer group. The FoSC will aim to work with local heritage groups, schools and the local authority to enhance the environment of the cemetery, record and share the heritage of those buried there with the community and train volunteers in heritage conservation and recording.

With over 50 acres of land, a plethora of natural wildlife, underused community buildings and a unique pathway into the stories of those who lived in Southend-on-Sea, FoSC will be a charity that can help support how the Sutton Road Cemetery, North Road Burial Ground and Leigh Cemeteries are taken care and respectfully used by the community in future. Working in concert with local heritage organisations the Friends of Southend Cemeteries will aim to promote the use of the Sutton Road Cemetery, North Road Burial Ground and Leigh Cemetery as places that can be seen as community assets rather than wasted spaces.
